Fullstory Advanced: Unlocking Deeper Insights with Page and Element Settings
As we become more adept with Fullstory’s basic operations ( see Fullstory: The Fastest Path to Proficiency ), we’re now able to set up Funnels, Metrics, and observe user behavior through Session Replays.
The next step for more precise insights is learning how to configure “Page” and “Element”. These settings not only improve our analysis efficiency but also bring richer data. Here, we’ll outline the specific benefits and methods for setting up Pages and Elements.
Why Set Up Pages and Elements?
1. To observe Journey and Heatmap data
In Fullstory, the Journey mapping feature requires us to pre-define target URLs as Pages in order to set them as start or end points.
Heatmap analysis, however, can be initiated by inputting URLs directly. But if a target page is pre-defined as a Page and has already gathered data, the Heatmap analysis results are available immediately without needing several days for data aggregation.
2. Accurately Measuring CTR
When setting up Elements, Fullstory’s paid feature “Watch this element” allows us to track render and view events for specific UI elements. This feature records each element’s impression (view event), enabling precise CTR (Click ÷ Impression) calculations, helping us evaluate the attraction and effectiveness of the element.
If view events are not set up, we might use Page Visits as an Impression proxy, but this may lack accuracy, as the target UI element might be below the fold or only visible to specific users. Only through the Watch element feature can we get precise metrics that meet these criteria.
3. Improved Readability in Session Replay
In Session Replay, Pages and Elements display with their assigned names, allowing us to more quickly and intuitively identify each part of the content. This results in smoother replays and helps us see key interaction points on the page.
How to Set Up Pages and Elements?
1. Universal Setup Path for Pages and Elements
We can configure Page and Element naming and definitions directly in Fullstory’s Settings.
2. Quick Element Configuration
In Event Filter or Session Replay’s Inspect mode, we can define target Elements on the spot without switching screens, making the setup process more convenient.
By mastering Page and Element settings, we enhance Fullstory’s data precision and empower our team to identify and address product issues more efficiently. However, tracking every event is not the end goal — these data points offer insights into user needs, allowing us to continuously optimize the product experience.
Since Fullstory is designed for corporate teams, establishing a clear naming convention is equally crucial. Teams, including PMs, designers, marketers, and developers, each have their naming conventions within their domains. Properly naming Pages, Elements, and visualizations to be universally understood across roles is its art.
